Are sunscreens always beneficial, or can they be detrimental to users? A research team led by UC Riverside chemists reports that unless people out in the sun apply sunscreen often, the sunscreen itself can become harmful to the skin.

"When people who live in Greenwich or come to Greenwich wash their faces with the water, then, relatively speaking, it has an adverse effect on the skin," Dr. Dennis Gross said. Just released Sunday, January 15, 2006 the California Medical Board announced that at its November 2005 meeting the California Medical Board voted unanimously to deny equivalent status to The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. As a consumer it is important to distinguish between surgeons that claim to be board certified and the status extended to the boards they are affiliated with. Consumers should be aware that not all boards are recognized by The American Board of Medical Specialties. In other words, not all boards are created equal.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) have joined forces to raise awareness about the dangers of unlicensed personnel performing medical cosmetic procedures in non-clinical settings. Recent cases of patients receiving BOTOX(R) and tissue fillers at shopping malls, beauty salons or in their homes by individuals without sufficient training or licensure caused concerns among clinical and public health experts.
